New Brighton redevelops a former aggregate mine into a mixed-use community that embraces the principles of sustainability. An inter-connected grid of streets, mix of uses, variety of housing types/densities, and placement of amenities in proximity to homes were designed to encourage walking, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Local food production is facilitated with an urban farm that enables the community’s residents to meet and socialize while growing their own produce. Low Impact Design features include front yard rain gardens, bio-swales and water quality basins that provide natural filtration of urban runoff.
