Wood Rodgers teamed with Q&D Construction and Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) for a design/build project for a 54-inch HDPE inverted siphon to replace a section of the Mogul Flume that was destroyed in the April 2008 earthquake. The flume is a critical element for the delivery of water via gravity flow to the Chalk Bluff Water Treatment Plant. We served as both the civil and geotechnical designer for this complex project. The design alternative chosen to bypass the flume, rather than replace it, was developed by Wood Rodgers. This unique design was selected in conjunction with the contractor’s and client’s considerations for timing and costs. The flume replacement delivers approximately 34 mgd of water to the treatment plant. The project was technically challenging and had significant time constraints, and Wood Rodgers was instrumental in completing it on-time and within budget. The selection of HDPE will allow reuse at Chalk Bluff when the emergency repair section is removed.
